This voume aims to ‘bring the state back into terrorism studies’ and fi the notabe gap that currenty exists in our understanding of the ways in which states empoy terrorism as a poitica strategy of interna governance or foreign poicy. Within this broader context, the voume has a number of specific aims. First, it aims to make the argument that state terrorism is a vaid and anayticay usefu concept which can do much to iuminate our understanding of state repression and governance, and iustrate the varieties of actors, modaities, aims, forms, and outcomes of this form of contemporary poitica vioence. Secondy, by discussing a rich and diverse set of empirica case studies of contemporary state terrorism this voume expores and tests theoretica notions, generates new questions and provides a resource for further research. Thirdy, it contributes to a critica-normative approach to the study of terrorism more broady and chaenges dominant approaches and perspectives which assume that states, particuary Western states, are primariy victims and not perpetrators of terrorism. Given the scarceness of current and past research on state terrorism, this voume wi make a genuine contribution to the wider fied, particuary in terms of ongoing efforts to generate more critica approaches to the study of poitica terrorism.
