Saxton Freymann and Joost Elffers's most accessible picture book yet--a zoo of baby animals carved out of fruits and veggies, sized (and priced!) perfectly to sell to the gift and children's market.
A menagerie of animals decorate the gloriously colored pages of BABY FOOD. Animals ingeniously carved and cut from a cornucopia of fruits and vegetables, of course--what else would you expect from the talented Saxton Freymann and Joost Elffers, who brought us HOW ARE YOU PEELING?! A Chinese eggplant becomes a little penguin and a red pepper transforms into a baby hippo. A turnip becomes a baby duck and a cauliflower a sheep.
Parents, babies, and new moms and pops will love to share these animal babies! They make great winter holiday and Easter gifts for grown-ups too.

Imagine a lamb with a cauliflower body. A baby mouse made of radishes. A yellow-pepper bunny and a lemon bear cub. Yes, Saxton Freymann and Joost Elffers--the creators of How Are You Peeling?, Dog Food, and more--are back, this time constructing baby animals out of fruits and vegetables. Each page features a crisp photograph of an adorable baby creature creatively crafted from produce, contrasted with a bold, solid-color backdrop, and identified by name (puppy, kitten, baby alligator, etc.). Children will learn the unusual names of various baby animals (kangaroo joey, seal pup, spiderling, owlet) while they're giggling at the notion of an onion kitten or potato duckling. You'd have to be made of a very hard vegetable indeed to deny the charms of a tiny peanut owl or a kiwi monkey. Irresistible! (Baby to preschool) --Karin SnelsonAbout the Author:
In the fertile mind of artist/sculptor Saxton Freymann, a cauliflower is a poodle, an artichoke is a wolf, a banana is an octopus, and a pumpkin is just about anything. Fruits and veggies - meticulously carved, then photographed - are his special gift to the bountiful world of children's literature. "What's great about food," he says, "is that it keeps all of the photos fun." Freymann lives in New York City with his wife and three children, all of whom are very healthy, he says, because they eat the cast of characters he works on. For more information about Saxton Freymann, visit: scholastic.com/tradebooks Born in The Netherlands to artist parents, Joost turned his creative energy to food in 1976, when he became fascinated with the garnishes used by Japanese sushi chefs. The result was Play With Your Food, his first collaboration with Saxton Freymann, and a bestseller for the whole family. Joost believes that if you can open children's eyes and thinking with things they can understand and duplicate - like food creations - a new range of creativity opens up. "Then," he says, "you can take them to a museum."
