FRANK YERBY was the celebrated and--in some circles--notorious African-American novelist, poet, and popular writer who rose to fame with the publication of The Foxes of Harrow in 1946. He wrote thirty-two additional novels that sold over fifty-five million copies. Several of his books were made into successful films. Speak Now is the first of his books to be returned to print. GENE ANDREW JARRETT is Assistant Professor of English at the University of Maryland, College Park, where he specializes in African-American literature and literary theory. He is author of Deans and Truants: Race and Realism in African American Literature, editor of African American Literature Beyond Race: An Alternative Reader, and co-editor of The Complete Stories of Paul Laurence Dunbar.
