The author sets himself a modest goalto present the successive stages in the annals of Soviet Jews since the October Revolution. He essentially succeeds, although the chronology of this multifaceted subject is difficult to follow. After a swift review of Jewish life in tsarist Russia, he presents Jewish fortunes and their far more numerous misfortunes in Soviet times. Soviet Jews were to Lenin a tiresome sect, but to his despotic successor Stalin, a classic Russian anti-Semite, they were"rootless cosmopolites." The author leaves us with a question.
