The author of The Handmaid's Tale discusses the writing life and the role of the writer in society, making reference to many other writers, alive and dead, to make her case.
Review:
"While all this is well and lightly written, none of it is particularly original....The problem comes when she slips off into extended discussions about critical and literary issues which have long been done and dusted....By all accounts, when Atwood delivered the Empson Lectures back in 2000, she was a revelation. Her voice...was sardonic, amused, daring you not to take her too seriously. Unfortunately, translated onto the page, this 'voice' has lost its edge: not quite clever enough to make you see the world anew; not quite intimate enough to make you hear Margaret Atwood afresh."
Kathryn Hughes, Literary Review, May 2002

Negotiating with the Dead: A Writer on Writing (Hardback) (ISBN: 9780521662604) Atwood, Margaret Eleanor Quantity Available: 10
Book Description: CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS, United Kingdom, 2002. Hardback. Book Condition: New. 198 x 129 mm. Brand New Book with Free Worldwide Delivery. What is the role of the writer? Prophet? High Priest of Art? Court Jester? Or witness to the real world? Looking back on her own childhood and writing career, Margaret Atwood examines the metaphors which writers of fiction and poetry have used to explain - or excuse! - their activities, looking at what costumes they have assumed, what roles they have chosen to play. In her final chapter she takes up the challenge of the title: if a writer is to be seen as 'gifted', who is doing the giving and what are the terms of the gift? Margaret Atwood's wide reference to other writers is balanced by anecdotes from her own experiences, both in Canada and on the international scene. The lightness of her touch is underlined by a seriousness about the purpose and the pleasures of writing, and by a deep familiarity with the myths and traditions of Western literature.
