Grade 1-3 --Victoria Beasley, heroine of this cheerful animal fantasy, is a winsome pink pig, but her arch rival Arnold Kropper is enough to give pigs a bad name. Both want very much to win the kite-flying contest at the local fair, and Arnold resorts to skullduggery to put Victoria's piggy-faced kite out of the competition. The field seems clear for his dramatic dragon kite until The Great Orsini, magician of the fairground, comes to Victoria's rescue. He turns her into a kite; once she masters her (understandable) fear of flying without benefit of airplane, she sails to victory. Muddled messages about sportsmanship, courage, and the will to win do not quite spoil the fantastic fun. Delicately colored illustrations, the book's chief charm, are full of delightful detail. The little pigs on Victoria's vandalized kite go cross-eyed after colliding with Arnold, the merry-go-round steeds are haughty little pigs with saddles, and one of the fairgoers sports a button proclaiming his love of mud.
