2012 marked the end of the second period in the Maya Calendar and some thought the end of the world. The Journey Writers Group took up the challenge to write about the day before the end of the world. One group of writers thought about a science fiction or fantasy story. Others considered a more mainstream story. In a handful of stories the world as we know it is clearly ending. In others the end is not so clear; perhaps only an individual’s world is ending. At the core of all of the stories is an exploration of human emotions and the value of each day we are alive.

The life of a writer is never easy. Writing is a lonely solitary job. Spending hours late at night, on weekends, and before work trying to craft a series of sentences into a readable story. The authors in this collection have diverse backgrounds and life stories. Some have written stories since childhood, others are late to the life, and one member is still in High School. What we all have in common is we are members of the Journey writer group, we live in Northern Illinois, and we have completed one or more 50,000-word novels written during the National Novel Writing Month. Beyond these common threads, we share a love of books and writing, and we have a desire to have our stories read by others. In essence, we have stories to tell.

Do you hear a bird? by Ana Koulouris. Do You Hear a Bird? serves as a window to the end of the world from an unusual point of view. It explores the end through the eyes of an individual who has seen the collapse of their world and is now awaiting the end of everything else.
Waiting for Morning by Pat Clemons. Waiting for Morning centers around the last hours of individuals brought together under one roof. Chelsea, a strong willed woman and Eric her terminally ill husband. Orphaned children, Danny and Suzie, seek refuge and comfort with her. Together they wait for morning and the event that will destroy the world.
Carpe Diem by Samantha Thomas. The world will end at midnight. A group called Carpe Diem has instilled in its followers the idea of taking charge of their own destiny by taking their lives. This story explores what happens when one young girl, full of life, decides to seize the day.

Chris Williams by Wendy Dickmann. It's Chris William day in Chicago and the world will never be the same.
MAINSTREAM FICTION
Don't Blink by Katherine Czerwinski. Lynn is dying. James is fighting to keep her alive. At issue is the toll the fight is taking on James.
With the Time We Have Left by Jez Layman. As doomsday looms on the horizon, three friends plan their last night on Earth. Javier arranges a camping trip on the beach and Ruby devises to spend the night at home in ultimate comfort, but in his last moments, Franklin begins to understand that it matters less how you spend your time than it does who you spend your time with.
Or is There Something More? by K. C. Swier. Turning fifty isn't so bad, unless it spells the end of everything you know. Travis is nearing fifty and he has been warned to start looking over his shoulder at work. Travis has to come to grips with his inner fears as he wonders if the bell is indeed tolling for him and if his world is ending.
Champagne and You by Roger C. Lubeck. Teddy wants to spend the last night of the world drinking champagne with Diane. Diane thinks they should wait until tomorrow.
