9780679745402: Technopoly: The Surrender of Culture to Technology

In this witty, often terrifying work of cultural criticism, the author of Amusing Ourselves to Death chronicles our transformation into a Technopoly: a society that no longer merely uses technology as a support system but instead is shaped by it--with radical consequences for the meanings of politics, art, education, intelligence, and truth.

Review:

Neil Postman is one of the most level-headed analysts of education, media, and technology, and in this book he spells out the increasing dependence upon technology, numerical quantification, and misappropriation of "Scientism" to all human affairs. No simple technophobe, Postman argues insightfully and writes with a stylistic flair, profound sense of humor, and love of language increasingly rare in our hastily scribbled e-mail-saturated world.

From AudioFile:

Neil Postman's cogent and lucid analysis of our indiscriminate embrace of technological innovation deserves the widest possible audience. But it is truly a book, abstract, dense and closely reasoned--something to be lingered over and studied. The audiobook format is definitely second choice, except perhaps for a first overview. Still, it would benefit by a more leisurely, engaged reading than it gets from Jeff Riggenbach, who sounds like a very competent announcer disinterestedly transcribing the text to tape. The recording is clear but has numerous small flaws which suggest hasty production. J.N. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Book Description Vintage March 1993, 1993. Trade. Book Condition: New. The history of ideas is all too often discussed without reference to broader social and environmental factors. This book won't let us do that. It represents a creative attempt to show us how technology -- computers, modern medicine, convenient travel -- has changed our very hearts and minds. Postman explores how, for example, the ubiquity of pictures in the modern world has inevitably altered our responses to religious images, how ever-spreading sciences have created our silly faith in experts, how the modern achievements with numbers have led to a preoccupation with quantity (witness our love for statistics and polls) at the expense of quality, how mass advertising has made almost all public discourse trivial.
