From Booklist:
David Long will restore your faith in the short story. This volume consists of 12 simple, fully realized, beautifully written tales, mostly set in and around the small city of Sperry, somewhere in the Rocky Mountains. In "Cooperstown," a former major-league pitcher seeks out and reconciles with the potential superstar whose career he ended with an intentional beanball pitch. "Perfection" describes the internal and external dialogues of a young woman who may be telling the police about a homicide she's witnessed. In "Talons," a young man informs his aunt's longtime secret love about her death. The title story explores the relationship of two sisters-in-law who share a terrible, never-discussed secret. There are no huge themes expounded upon here, no Joycean epiphanies, just reflections on life's small victories and defeats and ruminations on thoughts left unexpressed. Long manages to capture the essence of a character in a single sentence, sometimes in just a phrase. The stories in this thoroughly satisfying collection have previously appeared in such magazines as the New Yorker, Story, and GQ. George Needham
