"One of the greatest pleasures of this impressive collection of 12 Russian fables is Lobel's sophisticated artwork. She outdoes herself with watercolor-and-gouache paintings that are brilliantly colored and wonderfully composed. The details are just right....Heins' prose retellings of poems by Ivan Andreevich Krylov, "Russia's greatest fabulist,' are elegant. A gem that deserves a place in folklore collections."--Booklist.

About the Author:

Anita Lobel's name is synonymous with the best in children's literature. She is the creator of such classics as Alison's Zinnia and Away from Home, and she received a Caldecott Honor for her illustrations in On Market Street. She is the creator of two books about her cat, Nini, One Lighthouse, One Moon (a New York Times Best Illustrated Book), and Nini Here and There. Her childhood memoir, No Pretty Pictures: A Child of War, was a finalist for the National Book Award. Anita Lobel lives in New York City.

From School Library Journal:
Grade 3-6?Heins retells 12 Russian fables with mixed success. Krylov, one of Russia's most beloved fabulists, wrote in verse, which Heins has changed to prose. In this form, the selections lose much of their humor and theatrical qualities. "The Kite" and "Fortune and the Beggar" are eloquent, but others, such as "The Quartet," seem stilted or underdeveloped. Krylov's fables commonly use typical, real characters rather than allegorical ones, and though the morals are not obvious, the stories are didactic. Still, some of them will captivate children and spark debates about their meanings. Lobel's watercolor-and-gouache folk-art illustrations feature a varied palette and intricate designs. Through glorious colors and evocative expressions, the artist adeptly captures the essence of each tale, from the drama of "The Eagle and the Mole" to the smugness of "The Kitten and the Starling." Though fables were meant to be told aloud, the paintings will entice youngsters to read this collection independently.?Cheri Estes, Dorchester Road Regional Library, Charleston, SC
