Grade 4-6?This book concentrates on the challenges and goals of scientific research in the Arctic and Antarctic. Markle compares the two polar regions; describes the uses of technology in combating the areas' rigors; and reviews the subjects of investigation, from auroras to icebergs. There is also a short section on international scientific cooperation and children living in Antarctica. What makes the book unique is the inclusion of 13 activities that range from simple experiments involving ice, water, and a home freezer to invitations to brainstorm on ways to harness the power of auroras. Appropriate cautions are indicated where necessary. Many clear, interesting color photographs, including some satellite and aerial views, add to this title's appeal. The lack of a table of contents is to some extent offset by the index, although a couple of the activities are omitted from it. Unfamiliar terms are defined in the text and listed in the index; there is no glossary. Laurence Pringle's Antarctica (S & S, 1992) includes a couple of the same photos and covers some of the same material, but only for that region and without the activities. Lawrence Williams's Polar Lands (Marshall Cavendish, 1990) is meatier, with some excellent maps, graphs, and diagrams, but it lacks the scientific emphasis and the activities of Markle's volume. What's it like to be a scientist investigating the North or South Pole? Markle (Science to the Rescue, 1994, etc.) first clarifies the major difference between the two regions, then provides readers with a clear introduction to contemporary scientists at both poles, describing how they dress for the cold, build shelters, investigate glaciers, study life forms (from polar bears to krill), learn about the earth's past through air bubbles trapped in ancient ice, and investigate the aurora borealis as a possible source of future fuel. Inviting full-color photographs on every page show the explorers, equipment, animal life, and the frozen environment. Less successful are brief experiments and brainstorming suggestions in boxed insets intended to help readers with scientific concepts.
