An art practiced more in the Old World than in the U.S., marquetry--the technique of applying thin layers of wood in patterns on top of a surface--here acquires a new sheen. British woodworkers Middleton and Townsend separate their explanations for not-so novices into two parts: the first part covers methods and materials; the second, applications, including a few patterns. At the onset, the instructions seem relatively simple, but as the authors progress, it's clear this is intended for readers with some knowledge of woodworking tools and techniques. And although they promise one step-by-step lesson, the directions should have been reconstructed to feature more pictures, less text.
