Dada and Surrealism were two revolutionary art movements which emerged in response to the events and ideas of the early twentieth century. Dada, characterized by found objects and works made according to the laws of chance, was anarchic and anti-art. In part a reaction to the senseless destruction of the First World War, it questioned all accepted values. Surrealism, in contrast, was a more defined movement which evolved in the 1920s as artists and writers took up Freud's concept of the unconscious to undermine traditional conventions. By use of such techniques as automatism, artists sought to represent in concrete terms the imagery of dream and fantasy. In this clear and lively account, Matthew Gale explores the work of a wide range of artists -- from Marcel Duchamp and Raoul Hansmann to Max Ernst, Rene Magritte and Salvador Dali -- and uses paintings, collages, sculptures, assemblages, photographs, photomontages, film stills and graphics to illustrate the rich variety of Dada and Surrealist art. This essential introductory book is the first to reproduce many of these works in colour.
Review:
"Gale's explanations and theories of art history show us Dali and Picasso placed within the context of their contemporaries in the years leading up to and during World War I....Gale explains how values similar to those of Dada artists appeared simultaneously in the literature of great writers of the age including Anatole France, Marcel Proust, and Andre Gide."
Mimi MacFarland, Bloomsbury Review, Nov/Dec 1999

Book Description: Phaidon Press Ltd, United Kingdom, 1998. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 222 x 160 mm. Brand New Book with Free Worldwide Delivery. This introductory survey traces the origins and development of two revolutionary 20th-century art movements: Dada and Surrealism. It explores the full range of artistic production, including film, photography and painting. The art is situated within a context of ideas. Against the background of the slaughter of World War I, the Dadas embarked upon a total reconsideration of nationalism, materialism and the basis of art. Hugo Ball and Tristan Tzara in Zurich, Richard Huelsenbeck and Raoul Hausmann in Berlin, Francis Picabia and Andre Breton in Paris - all emphasized the freedom of the individual in their art. Dada has no consistent style and was never an organized movement. Surrealism, on the other hand, was a clearly constituted movement with a recognized charismatic leader, Andre Breton. In an attempt to reconcile the rational and irrational sides of existence, the movement explored dreams, trances and automatism. The results include the paintings of Max Ernst, Joan Miro, Salvadore Dali and Rene Magritte.
