Lodgings in Exile: A Novel (ISBN: 0720605296 / 0-7206-0529-6) Fischer, Wolfgang Georg Quantity Available: 1
Book Description: Peter Owen, London, 1979. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: VG+. 0720605296 Jacket condition: VG+. Lodgings in Exile is the central panel of Wolfgang Georg Fischer's triptych of autobiographical novels centred on Austria before and during the Second World War. As in Interiors, the first volume of the series, the author's unique style, a subtle blend of fact and fantasy, produces a highly original portrayal of a piece of recent history. The novel opens in Vienna in 1938, where 'Sailor Boy', the narrator's father, strives to evade the bitter consequences of the Anschluss. In a sequence of 'snapshots'. Wolfgang Fischer brilliantly evokes the atmosphere of the Austrian capital as it is incorporated into Hitler's Thousand-Year Reich. The family-Sailor Boy, his wife and five-year-old son-take refuge at Windenau Castle in Yugoslavia, home of industrial magnate Paul Knapp Jr. There, as Europe slides towards war, they play out the days in a round of party games and impotent political speculation in a last attempt to evade the realities of refugee life. When war comes, Sailor Boy emigrates to England, leaving his wife and the narrator (the 'Nursery Self) to a downward progress through the bedsitters and lodging-houses of Zagreb before their inevitable return to Hitler's Austria. Lodgings in Exile will be welcomed both by those who enjoyed Interiors and by readers new to Fischer's work. Combining wit, insight and acute observation, the author brings a fascinatingly novel perspective to the experience of refugee life. 264 pages. Your order ships by the next business day!.
