Editorial Reviews:
Synopsis:

A Lincoln biographer provides readers with a intimate portrait of the Lincoln family in the White House, from their less-than-spectacular entrance to that fateful night at Ford's Theater.

Review:

"LINCOLN AT HOME is little more than a magazine article with an appendix. The small helping of meat at its center is the text of a speech that Donald gave at the White House in 1990, while George Bush pere was president. At that point, publication of Donald's biography of Lincoln was still half a decade away; as he acknowledges in his introduction to this volume, his visit to the White House helped advance his research, though it should be pointed out that if you've read Donald's LINCOLN you will have precious little reason to read LINCOLN AT HOME, which retraces familiar ground involving the combination of affection and tensions between Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln, their unbearable grief at the sudden death of their son Willie, and Lincoln's 'patience' and 'humanity.' The rest of the book consists of letters and telegrams that various Lincolns sent each other; they are mostly perfunctory and unrevealing, though Lincoln scholars may find it useful to have them assembled in one place."

Joanthan Yardley, Washington Post, 11/16/2000

Book Description: SIMON SCHUSTER, United States, 2003. Paperback. Book Condition: New. Reprint. 229 x 152 mm. Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. As Lincoln led the nation into the Civil War, managing the Union war effort, issuing the Emancipation Proclamation, winning reelection in 1864, and planning the Reconstruction of the South, he also led a private life, defined by his close relationship with his wife and his devotion to his children. Lincoln at Home offers a view into the life of the family through their written correspondence. With a brief account of their years in the White House and the complete collection of all the known letters exchanged by Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln, this elegant portrait defines the sixteenth president as a dedicated -- though often a desperately busy and distracted -- family man. Lincoln at Home is an intimate and rare glimpse of the president as husband and father, a cheerful man pinned to the floor while playing with his children, and a desolate man struck down by grief at the death of his son. Beyond this, we are shown a personal side of the man who managed one of the most difficult periods in American history. Bookseller Inventory # APC9780743211420
