Peter 'Mad Max' Maxwell is a very busy man. As Head of the Sixth Form at Leighford High he is trying to mark GCSE coursework on time, and at home baby Nolan claims a lot of attention, as does Metternich the cat. His 'Significant Other' DS Jacquie Carpenter has decided he has to give up his amateur sleuthing, but how can he refuse when the terminally nervous school photographer asks for his help after accidentally photographing a murder on the beach? Their discovery of a body buried in the sand dunes sets off a chain of events that only Mad Max can break.

About the Author:
M.J. Trow has written highly praised historical biographies as well as studies of true crime. He is also a very successful novelist. Among his recent publications are lives of Boudicca, Vlad the Impaler, Kit Marlowe, the hero of the Charge of the Light Brigade, Captain William Morris, War Crimes: Underworld Britain in the Second World War and The Cato Street Conspiracy. He has produced several best-selling accounts of criminal cases, in particular volumes on Derek Bentley, the Wigwam Murder and Jack the Ripper, but he is perhaps best known for his many novels which include the Lestrade and Maxwell series.
Review:
"Trow manages to be funny, tragic and puzzling, which isn’t an easy trick to pull off." (Manchester Evening News)

"The book is written very well, as one would expect from a high school teacher! The chapters are pleasantly short and sweet - Trow definitely has the ability to write succinctly, which is great, because I didn't feel that I was wasting my time with unnecessary description." (The Bookbag)
