From Booklist:
World and Its Peoples: Eastern and Southern Asia follows the 11-volume World and Its Peoples: Middle East, Western Asia, and Northern Africa (2007) in a new Marshall Cavendish reference series for young adults that will eventually include every country and region in the world. The articles in this geographic encyclopedia were written by many scholars in the fields of sociology, language, history, and area studies from a variety of institutions from all regions of the globe. The simple-to-use volumes are organized in color-coded sections covering “Geography and Climate” and “History and Movement of Peoples” for regions and government, modern history, culture, and daily life for countries. Each country section is introduced by a statistical profile, a map, and a chronology. All of the books are lavishly illustrated with color and black-and-white photographs that include examples of visual art. The maps are numerous and detailed. The first volume lists contents by country and volume. In addition to a general index, volume 11 contains a number of thematic indexes, including one for climate. The volume also contains appendixes providing a wealth of comparative information that is not included in volumes 1–10. For example, in the “Communication” section, there is an interesting chart showing the number of people per cell phone in each country. The lowest number (0.8) is in Hong Kong; the highest (1,200) is in North Korea. Other appendixes provide data on geography, population, cities, family life, trade, and transportation. There is a helpful glossary, where many cultural terms are concisely defined. A list of further readings and a short listing of electronic resources are also included. The goal of this set of books is to provide high-school students with background for understanding the diversity of places and people by region or country as well as in the world. It is recommended for school and public libraries. Grades 9-12. --Lisa Johnston
