Synopsis

As the sun begins to set behind the treetops, all the little creatures who live in one very large tree settle down to sleep for the night. The baby birds, the baby squirrels, and the baby mice all snuggle up in their nests. Even the baby rabbits in a nearby burrow are ready for sleep. But far out on a tree branch, one very unusual baby animal is wide awake and making a lot of noise. The mothers and fathers of the baby birds, squirrels, mice, and rabbits decide that they should try singing and rocking the noisy baby to sleep, but all their efforts fail. It's a baby owl-and owls always sleep during the day, then stay awake the whole night through. reS-Gr 1-The appearance of a noisy baby owl disrupts the quiet bedtime of a group of woodland animals. Mother Bird, Daddy Mouse, and Mama and Papa Squirrel try to figure out why this strange-looking creature is awake and making noise at night. Worried that the squawking and screeching will wake their children, the grown-ups attempt to sing, rock, and cuddle the owlet to sleep. Their efforts are in vain and three of their children, "who [were] only pretending to be asleep," decide to go and talk to the noisy stranger. The writing is functional, with the mystery bluntly disclosed: "I'm an owl and I'm waiting for my Mommy. We go out at night and sleep during the day." Beckett's watercolor illustrations realistically capture the nature setting. The "strange baby" is appropriately depicted with wide eyes and disheveled tufts of feathers. Although at times the text lacks the artfulness of the illustrations, young children will enjoy the puzzlement of the creatures and will relate to the young animals' wish of staying up all night.
