Gr 4-6-These slim volumes offer basic information for reports. The first chapter of each book gives a detailed description of a disaster; subsequent chapters detail the investigation, arrest, and evidence used to convict the perpetrators. Quotes from eyewitnesses and/or survivors and full-color photographs add to the emotional impact of the texts. Even though none of the books has a map, The Exxon Valdez is well documented with citations for all of the statistics and quotes. A chart lists the name, place, date, and cause of other major tanker disasters with a tabulation of the gallons of oil spilled. In the other two books, notes do not consistently support the statistics. Each volume ends with the identical chart of related incidents. The writing in all three titles is straightforward, at times almost terse, leaving readers with facts on which to base their own opinions. For a more detailed version of the Exxon Valdez disaster, see Thomas Schouweiler's The Exxon-Valdez Oil Spill (Lucent, 1991). Reluctant readers will be drawn to Sherrow's titles for the simplicity of language and the full-color photos.-Marilyn Fairbanks, East Junior High School, Brockton, MA
