Hine presents a carefully researched account of life in Grass Valley, stressing the influence of the town's institutions on the young Royce. The philosopher's family, particularly his mother Sarah Royce, receive detailed treatment. Hine proceeds in a leisurely way to canvass Royce's academic career: the discussion of Joseph Le Conte's influence on Royce is especially valuable. In "The West as Metaphysics," Hine attempts to discern the effect of the American West on Royce's thought, with inconclusive results. The book is more a work on Western Americana than on philosophy.
