Published to accompany an exhibition opening at The Museum of Modern Art, New York in October 1996, Jasper Johns reproduces 240 of the artist's works, arranged in sections that allow comparisons of paintings, drawings, and prints from each era of his career. In his introduction Kirk Varnedoe charts the themes which have informed Johns' work since the epoch-making Flag and Target paintings of the mid-1950s, and in a separate essay surveys Johns' influence on the artists of his own time. Roberta Bernstein analyzes the variety of references in Johns' work to many of his predecessors, from Leonardo and Grınewald to Cızanne, Duchamp, and Picasso.
