Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) is one of the best-loved French Impressionists. During his long and highly productive career, he created works ranging in subject matter from scenes of modern life to portraiture, nudes, landscape, and still life. An ardent draftsman, Renoir executed many studies and finished drawings, as well as watercolors, etchings, lithographs, and works in other print mediums. The Art Institute of Chicago owns works representing every aspect of Renoir's output, including such masterpieces as Jugglers at the Circus Fernando, The Rowers' Lunch, and Two Sisters (On the Terrace). This new volume in the Institute's Artists in Focus series (Degas and Monet have already been published by Abrams) shows 40 works in the collection, all reproduced in full color, and numerous comparative illustrations in black-and-white. Nine beautiful and instructive full-page details add drama and show Renoir's brushwork. Quotations from the artist and his friends offer further insights. The engaging and accessible text is by Douglas Druick, Searle Curator of European Paintings and Prince Trust Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Art Institute of Chicago.
