Synopsis:

Founded in 1898 by Czar Nicholas II, the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg celebrates its centennial with this first book on its collections. Illustrated throughout in color, it surveys the great sweep of Russian art from the late Middle Ages to the present, spanning the superb icons of the 12th century through the most interesting provocations of the 20th-century avant-garde. The Russian Museum was established to offer the public a complete picture of the country's arts. First housed in a monument of Russian Neoclassic architecture, the Mikhailovsky Palace, the museum now fills three palaces and is today the world's largest repository of Russian art, with more than 400,000 works. Here, the scope of the collections is seen to be extraordinary, including painting, sculpture, graphic work, decorative arts, jewelry, folk art, and coins. There are more than 5,000 icons, including the early 15th-century icons of Saint Peter and Saint Paul by the great Andrei Rublev, and such 20th-century treasures as Kazimir Malevich's signature Black Square.
