Editorial Reviews:
Review:
"The thickness of detail and mastered research are...efficiently harnessed to Timm's theme: the devastating consequences of collisions between what are conventionally called civilization and primitivism. An intermittently slow read, but an important early work in the career of one of the best living German writers."

Kirkus, 01/15/2003

Review:
"[Timm's] fragmentary approach has great cumulative moral power, making us consider all sides of the story without forgetting that there were victims who deserve some remembrance. Whether MORENGA is entirely successful in literary terms is another matter: a lack of deep characterization...makes it quite difficult to make sense of. Yet that seems exactly the point, which is why MORENGA is so important. In the glare of genocide, everything else, including novelistic conventions..., comes to seem absurd....[S]ense alone is not enough for survival, and that is the haunting, disconcerting lesson of MORENGA. Like the Germans, Timm's novel takes few prisoners--and is all the more credible for it."

Giles Foden, New York Times Book Review, 04/20/2003

Book Description: New Directions Publishing Corporation, United States, 2005. Paperback. Book Condition: New. New edition. 194 x 125 mm. Brand New Book. Morenga, an early novel by Uwe Timm (Headhunter, The Invention of Curried Sausage), engages the mind on many levels -- historical, political, human. Set in German South West Africa in the first decade of the 20th century, it recounts the conflict between the colonial German Empire and the rebellious Africans of the Hottentot and Herero tribes led by the legendary Morenga. A daring and brilliant military tactician referred to as the Herero bastard, he was fluent in several languages and by all reports a man of compassion, intelligence, and integrity leading his people towards freedom. Even though his revolt is suppressed and by the novel s end he is hunted down and killed, his importance as one of Africa s historic figures is assured.Morenga has a fascinating story and Timm tells it with an ingenious mix of fact and fiction. Recounted through the eyes of Gottschalk, an engaging fictional military veterinarian, the narrative blends quotations from actual historic sources with gripping accounts of everyday life and military excursions. As he has repeatedly shown himself to be, Timm is a master storyteller, and his imagined scenes and characters are as real as the factual material he weaves into the story. The parallels between past events and later German history with its notions of the Untermensch (subhuman) and racial inferiority are subtly brought to mind while significant philosophical, political, and human issues are at play. Morenga is an intriguing novel of scope and significance and it has been well served by Breon Mitchell s fine translation. Bookseller Inventory # AAS9780811216265

Book Description: Paperback. Book Condition: New. Paperback. A gripping historical novel about colonial power and tribal rebellion, set in German-occupied Southwest Africa. Uwe Timm (Headhunter, The Invention of Curried Sausage) has been described in The New Yorker as an extraordinary storyteller. In this early novel, he focuses his narrative talents on the historical conflict between German colonists and African tribes under the leadership of the legendary Morenga in the first decade of the 20th century. A daring and brilliant military tactician, Morenga was fluent in several languages and by all reports a man of compassion, intelligence, and integrity, as he led his people towards freedom. Recounted through the eyes of Gottschalk, an engaging fictional military veterinarian, the narrative blends quotations from historical sources with actual accounts of everyday life and military excursions. The parallels between past events and later German history, with its notions of the Untermensch (subhuman beings) and racial inferiority, are subtly brought to mind, while significant philosophical, political, and human issues are at play. Morenga is an intriguing novel of scope and significance, and it has been well served by Breon Mitchells prize-winning translation. This item ships from multiple locations.
