Grade 8 Up-- A unique view of British colonial America that utilizes primary sources such as diaries, letters, and other accounts to show how the settlers felt about their new home and what life was actually like. Scott does a fine job of tying those sources together with a text that provides plenty of background information and is clear and easy to follow. Another strength here is the inclusion of material about groups such as Native Americans, indentured servants, and slaves, all of whom had an enormous impact on the colonies but who are often left out of or are mentioned only briefly in books on this period. Scott does not make the colonists into heroes or villains, but presents them as people who had a very different perspective on the world than we do today, especially with regard to the environment and racial understanding. The last chapter, which contains words and music to colonial songs, is somewhat out of place. The annotated bibliography is good, but the illustrations, mostly contemporary prints, are quite ordinary and add little. This title can be used for general reading or reports, and is a better written, more comprehensive account than Starkey's Land Where Our Fathers Died (Doubleday, 1962; o.p.), and is far superior to McCall's Settlers on a Strange Shore (Childrens, 1980). -- Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, MO
