Brenda Lewis Cleary, PhD, RN, FAAN, received a BSN and an MSN from Indiana University and a doctorate in nursing from the University of Texas at Austin. Until July of 1994, Dr. Cleary was Regional Dean and Professor at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing, where she received the Excellence in Teaching Award and the President's Academic Achievement Award. She currently holds the position of Executive Director of the North Carolina Center for Nursing, a state-funded agency committed to ensuring sufficient nursing resources to meet the health care needs of the citizens of North Carolina. Dr. Cleary served as project director for an initiative funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (Colleagues in Caring), the NC Nurse Workforce Planning Model, and she currently serves as a Magnet appraiser for the American Nurses Credentialing Center. She also serves on the North Carolina Institute of Medicine, a gubernatorial appointment, and is a Sigma Theta Tau Virginia Henderson fellow and a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. She also was selected as a Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellow, 2002 cohort.
Dr. Cleary has published numerous articles and book chapters related to the nursing workforce and nursing leadership, as well as an award-winning book on conducting research in long-term care settings.
Rebecca B. Rice, EdD, RN, MPH, is currently employed as a Legislative Consultant at Macaulay & Burtch, PC, in Richmond, Virginia. In that position, she lobbies for the Commonwealth Midwives Alliance and the Virginia Dietetics Association and assists other lobbyists with advocacy work. She also codirects the Virginia Quality Healthcare Network.
Prior to moving to Richmond in July 2003, Dr. Rice served as Deputy Director of Colleagues in Caring: Regional Collaborative for Nursing Work Force Development, a national program funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. She holds bachelor's and master's degrees in nursing from the University of Pennsylvania, a master's of public health from Virginia Commonwealth University, and a doctorate in higher education from the College of William & Mary.
Dr. Rice is a past-president of the Virginia Nurses Association. Currently, she chairs the Legislative Coalition of Virginia Nurses and is Vice President of the Virginia Partnership for Nursing. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International, the Virginia Public Health Association, the National and Virginia Leagues for Nursing, the American Organization of Nurse Executives, and the American Diabetes Association. She is a contributing editor of the American Journal of Nursing and serves on the editorial review panel for the Journal of Nursing Education and the D.C. metro advisory board for Nursing Spectrum.
