"In 1881/82 University College Dundee was founded, through the munificence of Miss Mary Ann Baxter, and its teaching was at first directed to University of London external degrees. In 1897 it was affiliated to the University of St Andrews, and a clinical medical school pertaining to both institutions was established in Dundee. The association, however, proved fraught with tensions, which led eventually to a Royal Commission chaired by Lord Tedder, and in 1953, to the merger of University College and the Medical School into a new college, named Queen's College. Finally, in 1967, the college became the University of Dundee. This book offers, for the first time, a detailed study of the relationship into which Dundee and St Andrews were yoked by a constitution which both Lord Cooper and Lord Tedder judged unworkable. The problems were exacerbated by the strains of the depression of the 1930s; by the desire of a municipal party to achieve the then-unattainable goal of university status; and by the attitudes of the brilliant but autocratic St Andrews' Principal, Sir James Irvine, and of the last Principal of University College, General Wimberley. In a final chapter the Secretary of the University describes the progress the new University has been able to achieve at a time when governments, at first insidiously and subtly, latterly brusquely and crudely, were retreating from Robbins." Pages have a bit of glue residue at inner edge half-title and slight sunning, but overall fine. Bound in blue cloth with silver author/title/publisher/'For the University of Dundee' on spine (title on red panel). Corners lightly rubbed, binding fine overall.
