Britain's navy and merchant marine policed and traded with a vast empire. Not surprisingly, the sailors who crewed these ships became folk heroes, the custodians of Nelson's tradition and the bringers of strange tales from across the seas. All too often, myth has disguised the reality of the sailor's life. Separated from their homes and families for long periods, crowded below decks in cramped conditions and continually prone to danger in the rigging of a rolling and pitching ship, they were no strangers to discomfort. Yet there was a lighter side to life, often displayed in the comradeship born of shared privation and danger? making a model below decks, singing a shanty or enjoying a wild 'run' ashore in San Francisco or Melbourne. This book takes a realistic look at the life of the Victorian sailor, both in the Royal Navy and in the merchant service, and assesses how conditions changed for the better with the coming of steam later in the nineteenth century.## ## Shire Books by Bloomsbury Publishing, a book publishing company based in London, England, and formerly by Shire Publications Ltd. and Osprey Publishing.
