Outsider art was first recognized, collected and categorized by Jean Dubuffet. He called it Art Brut, by which he meant an art unadulterated by any received ideas or any form of instruction. The term 'outsider art' was first coined by Roger Cardinal in 1972, and since then there has been growing interest in the work of 'outsiders': those working outside the mainstream of contemporary art. The label 'Outsider Art' by definition encompasses an enormous range of styles and techniques; what the work has in common is that it is created by individuals who are alienated from the average, common-sense world in some way. They know little of cultural history or of the tradition of fine art; many of them are educationally and socially disadvantaged, some are illiterate. They draw their inspiration from within and work spontaneously, often obsessively, to create images of remarkable power and beauty. The Outsider Collection was established in London in 1981 by Monika Kinley and Victor Musgrave, who had been a member of Jean Dubuffet's Compagnie de l'art brut. This international collection now consists of over three hundred works; Art Unsolved is the first book to be published on this extraordinary body of work.
