The use of mining spoil and waste as a source of aggregate for concrete in the South-West of England has led, in some instances, to the deterioration in the physical strength of concrete building materials, jeopardizing the structural integrity of properties built from this suspect concrete in Cornwall and parts of Devon. The "Mundic" problem, as this is known, has become the concern of the Devon and Cornwall branch of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors. The combined scientific experience and practical knowledge of surveyors and other experts is detailed in a recommended sampling, testing and reporting procedure to identify the condition of concrete in domestic and small commercial buildings built mainly prior to 1950. Practical advice includes: recommended survey and core-sampling procedures; petrographic examination procedure, interpretation and classification; model clause and topics for the conditions of engagement between the surveyor and the client; checklist of headings which should be included in the surveyor's report; petrographic report forms; and descriptions of the various concrete aggregates in Cornwall and parts of Devon. Diagrams and photographs depict the problems encountered by the surveyors and petrographers undertaking this work. The report should be of particular interest to mortgage valuers, surveyors and others involved with properties which may be affected.
