Tree of Paradise: Jewish Mosaics from the Roman Empire (ISBN: 0872731553 / 0-87273-155-3) Brooklyn Museum;Bleiberg, Edward Quantity Available: 3
Book Description: Museum. Hardcover. Book Condition: New. FLAWLESS COPY, BRAND NEW, PRISTINE, NEVER OPENED -- New exhibition catalogue, October 28, 2005-June 4, 2006. Accompanying the exhibition, Tree of Paradise: Jewish Mosaics from the Roman Empire illustrates twenty-one mosaic panels from an ancient synagogue that have not been seen by the public in fifteen years. The French army captain Ernest de Prudhomme discovered these important mosaics in 1883, the remains of the first Roman-period synagogue to be uncovered in modern times. This volume provides the opportunity to evaluate the place of the Brooklyn mosaics in the history of synagogue art for the first time since they entered the Brooklyn Museum collection in 1905. The primary subjects depicted in it are the Creation and Paradise; decorative motifs include birds and fruits, and two menorahs flank the Latin inscription. Additional works of art from the Brooklyn Museums classical collection are also reproduced, to provide a sense of context, outlining the artistic and cultural milieu in which the mosaic floor was created.
