This first installment of a historical fiction series from the 1980s follows two people, Abby Brewster and Edouard Fournet as their lives unravel and eventually meet up in the wilds of pre-Revolutionary America. The characters are somewhat believeable, as the author bases some of her writing on actual facts from the time period. However, the book is not really to be considered serious literature, as it was one of several simlilar style historical fiction/romances that were common in the 1980s. The book relies on blood, gore, and descriptive humiliation and sexual references to move it from scene to scene. Indians are particularly brutal, but then so are many of the white frontiersmen characters. All in all this series does a good job at entertaining the reader, but practically nothing in educating the reader. The series carried on through several generations of the offspring of Abby and Edward Forny (who Anglicized his name to cover his heritage). This series may be found in garage sales, but libraries likely won't carry it. If you can find it you might consider buying it, but if you can't find it anywhere, it really is no loss.
