It contains 160 pages with 130 tritone illustrations and measures 11.5 x 9.5 inches. Czech photographer Josef Sudek influenced the development of photography worldwide during his lifetime. Despite having only one arm after an amputation due to a military injury, he spent over 60 years working in photography. Andy Grundberg of the New York Times once said of Sudek that "the master of Czechoslovak photography turned whatever his lens touched into poetic gold." Although he began working in the 1920's, his first show in the West didnt come until 1974, at the George Eastman House, two years before his death. Originally published in association with a retrospective exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, "Poet of Prague" demonstrates his talents and in particular his relationship to the Czech city. It also features an essay detailing his career written by the executrix of Sudek's estate, Anna Farova. From the Publisher: "In a career that spanned nearly seven decades, Josef Sudek, one of the masters of twentieth-century photography, created his own solitary world of shadow and light, of theme and variation. The more than one hundred images in this monograph convey the spirit of Prague as well as the spirit of Sudek.".
