The text provides a historical survey of the medium in America from colonial artists and the folk traditions to the 20th century avant-garde artists and the realists of the 1970s and `80s. Individual chapters are reserved for America's watercolor masters: Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, John Marin, Charles Burchfield, and Edward Hopper. While the text deals with most of the artists briefly and in general terms, offering no fresh insights, it is fine for beginning students and laypersons seeking a general introduction.
