The first book to focus on Claude Monet's sojourns to the southern coasts of France and Italy, Monet and the Mediterranean unites over one hundred paintings created in the course of three major trips, from 1883 to 1908. Many of these works have never before been reproduced in color or even publicly shown, for they have been gathered together by Joachim Pissarro from the collections of not only major museums but of private individuals worldwide. Monet and the Mediterranean features over one hundred color plates, with introductory commentaries for each series or grouping of paintings. Produced in association with the Kimbell Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas, this book accompanies the first major exhibition of Monet's Mediterranean paintings.
"Monet And The Mediterranean" showcases 140 color illustrations, including dozens of paintings previously unpublished in color. "Monet And The Mediterranean" arises from a ground-breaking exhibition organized by noted art historian Joachim Pissarro. Pissarro's essay draws upon Monet's intense correspondence with Alice Hoschede (his confidante, lover, and eventually his wife) and upon the critical responses evoked by these paintings from the last phase of Impressionism until the present day. "Monet And The Mediterranean" is a benchmark contribution to art history in general, and the contribution and influence of Monet in particular.
Midwest Book Review, June 1997
Review:"Some of the commentary would have been better suited for a freshman Art Appreciation 101 class than a trade coffee-table art book for an adult, general public. However, this book is noteworthy for introducing art lovers to paintings that have not been overexposed."
Patricia J. Wagner, Bloomsbury Review, January/February 1998
