Two of the best and most peaceful weeks of my life were spent on a small island off the coast of Nova Scotia, Canada. I was researching a book about a boy who grew up on a lighthouse island and who was going to have to go to the mainland to high school, rather than follow on the family tradition of lighthouse keeping. I thought I had invented the story but found to my surprise that the real-life equivalent already existed there. I also found much more on that island than I expected. I discovered that not only were the lighthouse keepers losing their way of life, but that the inshore fishermen were, too.

Sylvia and Walter Young were kind enough to invite me into their family for those two weeks. Sylvia was one of the schoolteachers who married and stayed on the island. She was the last. Walter was a fisherman. Their fifteen year old son, Peter, was the last student to attend the island's one-room schoolhouse. Peter helped me to discover his island, and showed me how to dig for mussels. END
