From Library Journal:
Some 20 years ago, literature professor Robinson argued for the "close reading" of movies as texts a method of analysis steeped in the humanities and, at the time, a refreshing mode of inquiry. This clarion call was heeded by his prot g s, and it is his and their essays that compose this compendium. Rejecting the abstractions and ideologies subjectively employed by his contemporaries, Robinson attempted to expose the foibles of other film theorists and critics and, in so doing, somehow de-legitimize them. Even in his own work, however, fuzzy precepts occasionally clutter otherwise lucid discussions. A few of the contributions in this collection seem spurious (some creative nonfiction is included), as they attempt to portray ways of "seeing beyond," or seeing the world in new ways. Moreover, the book would have benefited from an introduction clearly outlining the aesthetics Robinson espoused while demystifying this man, whom several of the contributors seem to regard as a kind of guru. Robinson's essays purport to reject "conventional" theory and are in themselves historical artifacts. Of interest to students of film theory and criticism. Jayne Plymale, Univ. of Georgia, Athens
