Book Description: Museum of Jewish Heritage, New York, 2008. Softcover. Book Condition: New. First Edition (Unstated). 256 pages. Softcover. New book. Signed by the author. HOLOCAUST. This is the story of a small group of harried Jews who, fleeing for their lives from Nazi persecution, found a welcoming haven in the Domican Republic. At the Evian Conference of 1938, intended to solve the refugee crisis caused by a dangerously expanding Nazi Germany, no country opened its doors as graciously as the Dominican Republic. Once the Dominican government had extended its invitation the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, a philanthropic organization in New York, took action. It set up Sosua, a small refugee agricultural settlement on the northeastern shore of the island. Arriving amid lush tropical vegetation along an eight-mile beach, the refugees could only describe this abandoned banana plantation as "paradise." But they faced daunting problems. Middleclass urban Europeans, they needed to learn a new language and acquire new skills while adjusting to a hot climate and worrying about loved ones left behind in Europe. The story of their everyday lives offers a fascinating vignette that illustrates their enormous energy, perseverance, and hopes. Just as importantly, it shows the crucial role of three groups. The refugees could not have survived without the support of the Dominican government which offered them a shelter, the American Jewish philanthropists who funded, organized and subsidized their escape and settlement, and the Dominican people who came to Sosua to work with them and for them. This story offersa kaleidoscope of views and voices that came together in the creation, life, and transformation of Sosua. This volume was produced and published on the occasion of the exhibition Sosua: A Refuge for Jews in the Dominican Republic by the Museum of Jewish Herutage - A Living Memorial to the Holocaust.
