Maui Realtor Laura McDaniel feels she has finally gotten her life on an even keel after a divorce and the disappearance of her teenage daughter Annie. When her favorite customers want to purchase a glamorous property that is For Sale By Owner, Laura's instincts warn her this will be the most difficult sale of her real estate career...and she's right. When Annie abruptly returns to Maui, distraught and pregnant, Laura faces the daunting possibility of raising her grandchild alone while trying to succeed in an all-consuming profession.
Paying the Price vividly illustrates the daily life of a Realtor in Hawaii. Add a heaping helping of mother-daughter conflict, plus a quirky seller and bossy buyers, and the sum is a lively read on an armchair trip to the Valley Isle. The author was raised in Honolulu and raised her children on Maui, where she was a licensed Realtor and real estate instructor for many years. She wrote it as she lived it: the good, the bad, and the zany.
The Island setting creates a compelling sub-texture without overwhelming the story. Paying the Price received the coveted Honolulu Advertiser's Ka Palapala Po'okela Reader's Choice Award from the Hawaii Book Publishers Association in 2006 and an Award of Merit from the Colorado Independent Publishers Association in 2005.

Raves about "Paying the Price" from Readers:

I finished Paying the Price last night. Should have gone to sleep but was so hooked I stayed up until 1 a.m. to finish it. Loved the descriptions of local places. Great word choices and images. What an imagination! I couldn't predict any of the twists and turns. I remembered your hilarious tale of sitting in the surgical waiting area at Maui Memorial Hospital and saying that you had to incorporate that in a book.......and there it was. Fun!
S.F., Honolulu, Hawaii

The real estate issues were so true to life, and the characters, particularly the interaction between mother and troubled teen show tremendous sensitivity and insight. Paying the Price is a real page-turner! I like the writing style, and I enjoyed reading the book tremendously. Having been a realtor in Hawaii brought back vivid memories, including one particular "transaction from hell." My husband just finished reading it. He was totally captivated and very impressed.

I LOVED Paying the Price! Excellent/professional writing, a rattlingly good story, and so much Maui/Hawaii content. I don't think I know of any other book aimed at a mainstream/mainland audience that so accurately and delightfully captures our Island style, way of life and idiosyncrasies. MARVELOUS JOB! Eagerly awaiting the sequel.
L.J., Maui, Hawaii

I have finished Paying the Price and can't wait for the next book in the Laura series! The story/plot captured me. I didn't know what was coming. The descriptive writing gave me the experience of BEING on Maui again! And I can see how if I were an aspiring Realtor, this book would be full of excellent teachings for me.

Paying the Price was great! It was terrifically fun to get that gut-clench during the normal ups and downs of being a Realtor as well as affirming about how to do real estate correctly. A fast read and lots of fun!
B.J., Makawao, Hawaii

I finished Paying the Price on the ride back from Arizona yesterday. I LOVED it! I told my husband a little about it and may have even talked him into reading it. It was absolutely wonderful.

I finished Paying the Price yesterday. Cried my eyes out throughout but especially at the end. What a great writer you are! I enjoyed the reading thoroughly. I loved it so much that I took it wherever I was going. All of the women at my office have asked me how to order it. My dad is presently enjoying it.
E.W., Kihei, Hawaii

I loaned Paying the Price to a friend who had once lived in Hawaii, and she loved it. Brought her back to a place she loved. The woman is 78 and battling breast cancer, so she needed a nice escape and your book provided it for her.
N.K., Manhattan Kansas

I loved Paying the Price! I cried at the end......wow...can't believe what happened to the Coleman's house. WHEW!! Guess I won't complain about a little dirt and junk left behind by sellers again!

From the Author:
I'm often asked where the story for Paying the Price came from. I was actually working on a Civil War historical novel, and the research got the best of me. The more deeply I read, the less I wrote. Plus I was living on Maui at the time and hadn't the means to visit the the sites in Virginia where the story was set. I had reached the point where I couldn't go any further without a research trip. So I put all the Civil War books away (they are still in a box in my garage) and decided to write a novel about something that I knew.
At about the same time, I got involved in the most horrendous sale of my real estate career. Lives were threatened, and when I finally closed the sale, I thought,"Here's my plot, and it's a real page-turner . And boy do I know the real estate business."
Also at about the same time I picked up a mystery novel in which a main character was a Realtor - overdressed, overly made up, brassy, obnoxious and of course the murderer. I decided my novel would be about a Realtor who was a hard working, good person, as were I and my many friends in the business. Between us, we'd certainly had enough crazy experiences from which to draw inspiration.
