The subject of lighting was discussed from all points of view,----hygienic, economic, esthetic--in technical papers presented by individuals, committee reports and discussions at meetings; thus giving to the world a comprehensive treatment of the science and art from every standpoint, so that in ten years we have gathered in the printed TRANSACTIONS of the Society, volumes aggregating 8,000 pages, constituting the most ' complete reference library on illumination to be found anywhere. Before the Society was organized, lighting was largely a matter of guessing. Now it is a matter of science, and the rule of thumb that existed before has given way to definite calculations which may be depended upon to ensure the same lighting result in all cases under stated conditions.
