Amido compounds result from the reduction of the nitro derivatives of either aliphatic or aromatic series. But this method of preparation is entirely confined to the latter hydrocarbons, owing to the ease with which the nitro substitution products of this series are obtained. Nitro-benzene, for instance, is reduced to aniline on a commercial scale by means of iron and hydrochloric acid--C6H6N02 + 6H = C6H6NH2 + 2H2O. Secondary amines of the aromatic series may be obtained from the acetyl derivatives of the primary. Thus aniline heated with acetic acid gives acetanilide, C6H6NH;Hj + CH8COlOHi = H2O +C6H6NH(COCH3), and when this substance is acted upon by sodium in an indifferent solvent, such as toluene, the corresponding sodium derivative is obtained, C6H6NH(COCHs) + Na = H + C6H6NCIj3 This readily reacts with an aliphatic halogen derivative giving the corresponding alkyl-acetanilide, which on treatment with potash is broken down into the secondary amine and acetic acid, L CeHc5cH3 + CAI = NaI + C6H6Ng5Hc6H3 ii. C6H6NH +KOH = C6H6NHC2H6 + CH3COOK 3 Ethyl aniline. 4. Acid amides of the aliphatic series on treatment with bromine or potash give amines containing one less carbon atom. The first phase of the reaction consists in the formation of bromamides, CH3CONH2 + Br2 + KOH = CH3CONHBr + KBr + H2O These derivatives are then further broken down into amines, CH3CONHBr + 3KOH = KBr + K2CO3 + CH3NH2 Methylamine. This method is applicable to the amides of the fatty series up to those containing five carbon atoms. In the aromatic series this reaction...
