Excerpt from Following Feet

It is possible to find some slight analogy between the position of Sergeant "Leggy" Harris, on the morning of the fifteenth of June, one year in the first decade of this twentieth century, according to Christian computation: and the solitary horseman with whom G. P. R. James used to open up his half-forgotten romances. The analogy is but slight, for, to the best of my recollection, the solitary horseman always chose a heath and a dark night for his peregrinations, whereas Sergeant Harris "might have been seen wending his way" (I quote from a faulty memory only, and take for granted that the verb "to wend" is applicable to mounted men) on the date above mentioned, along the stubbly grass of the foreshore which divides the rifle ranges from the sea, between Felixstowe and Landguard Fort.

About the Author:
Anthony Hope (in full Sir Anthony Hope Hawkins) was born in London and educated at Marlborough and at Balliol College, Oxford. He became a lawyer, and dabbled in Liberal politics, but the immediate success of 'The Prisoner of Zenda', his fourth work, turned him entirely to writing. This work and its sequel, 'Rupert of Hentzau', both describe the perilous adventures of the Englishman Rudolph Rassendyll in the mythical kingdom of Ruritania. Anthony Hope successfully published many other novels and plays. He was knighted in 1918 and died in 1933.
