When miners found gold in Confederate Gulch in 1864, Diamond City, Montana Territory, leaped to life, quickly exploding into the territory's third largest boom town, and for a while, the richest. Today, you couldn't find its location on most maps, even historical ones. After the easy-to-find placer gold began to play out, individual and corporate miners turned to hydraulic mining. Diamond City began to fade away within only five years.
