The battle of Waterloo was one of the defining moments of European history, the end of the romantic tumult of Napoleon and the beginning of the "pax britannica" and what would become the Victorian empire. Of the many deeds of heroism on the 18th of June 1815, one was the supply of ammunition to Scottish regiments holding the Chateau of Hougoumont. Someeighty years later, this incident inscpired Arthur Conan Doyle to write a short story entitled "A Straggler of '15," and subsequently the one-act play Waterloo. The case book has been published for the Friends of the ACD Collection of the Toronto Reference library, to coincide with the Shaw Festival's production of Waterloo. In addition to the text of Conan Doyle's play and the short story which preceded it, the volume contains commentary from several prominent experts on Conan Doyle and from people involvedin the Shaw Festival production. It is unique treatment of this famous little play, and one which collectors will want to have in their own library.
