Although this is the 7th edition of this dictionary, it is really a new book. Not available since 1980, this new encyclopedic international edition has been totally revised and updated. It contains more than twice the number of entries as the 6th edition, not only on politics and government from aroung the world, but also terms and concepts on business, management, international economics, and law as they relate to government and politics. Also, it features an enlarged selection of original documents, statistical data, charts, graphs, figures, and maps in appendices.

About the Author:

Attended universities in Poland, Germany, England, Canada, and the United States, and hold the Baccalaureate in Social Science; Masters Degree in Political Science; Masters Degree in Law and Jurisprudence; Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science and Doctor of Juridical Science. In his professional career, the author was engaged in farming, transportation, elementary and university education and administration, journalism, foreign intelligence, and publishing. He is currently conducting research on the influence of political cultures on domestic productivity and international trade and marketing.

Fully revised and expanded since the sixth edition in 1978, this dictionary defines about 4800 selected terms and phrases dealing with international politics and public law, although the emphasis is primarily American. Entries vary in depth--many have substantial background information, others are only a few words. The 108 appendixes include historic documents, lists of government officials, charts, graphs, and so forth. While the author, who holds a Ph.D. in political science and a law degree, presents interesting definitions with amusing asides and anecdotes, his work has a number of shortcomings. For instance, his biases are often interjected into definitions. Numerous obscure terms are included, while coverage of more standard political terms is uneven. There is no index, and cross references are often inadequate. As the only recent general dictionary of politics that is international in scope, this work is recommended, with reservations, for comprehensive political science collections. Other libraries can find good scholarly coverage of U.S. politics with Jay M. Shafritz's HarperCollins Dictionary of American Government and Politics ( LJ 6/1/92). A solid general dictionary of international politics has yet to be published.
