Silver Swimmer is the dramatic chronicle of the monumental struggle to conserve and restore the great Atlantic salmon during the last half of the twentieth century. It is written by the person who led the campaigns and who has been called (by Marshall Field) the man who "knows more about Atlantic salmon from a conservation point of view than anyone alive today."
Silver Swimmer vividly describes the life cycle of this great game fish, its overexploitation by the Danes and Norwegians by drift netting on the high seas, and then the delicate, difficult efforts - led by the United States through international diplomacy - to face the threat of "The Salmon War." Buck - in what becomes the first historical narrative of these events - describes the founding of the Committee on the Atlantic Salmon Emergency (CASE), its successor, Restoration of the Atlantic Salmon in America (RASA), the development of the seminal high-seas treaty salmon aquaculture (and its environmental significance), and the future of the wild salmon.
This is a fascinating, pathbreaking book, sure to be of major interest to all conservationists and sportsmen.

From Publishers Weekly:
No sentimental paean to yet another endangered species, Buck's account of U.S. efforts to conserve the Atlantic salmon, a fish with international economic, recreational and symbolic value, is a political record with a focus on international diplomacy. The case is a classic one for environmentalists, including practical management solutions available to the countries and groups involved in the conflict. Even so, the effort to conserve and restore the North Atlantic game fish from over-exploitation developed into a 20-year series of battles in which greed, in the guise of tradition, enjoyed a tactical advantage. After a brief overview of the salmon's life-cycle (with particular attention to its most vulnerable periods), Buck, who led the Committee on the Atlantic Salmon Emergency and a later organization, Restoration of the Atlantic Salmon in America, lays out the grinding work of a mature environmental movement, documenting progress in a meeting-by-meeting, letter-by-protest-letter diary-like approach. Those who hope to "do something" about the environment will get a sobering and instructive view into the process from this expert chronicle. Photos not seen by PW.

From Library Journal:
Basing this book on his years of interest and experience with the subject, the author chronicles the efforts to conserve and restore the Atlantic salmon. His presentation is accurate and refreshingly candid, laying responsibility for the depletion of salmon stocks where it clearly belongs: "Nations generally have failed to discharge the principle obligation incumbent upon any government that permits the exploitation of renewable natural resources for personal pleasure or private profit." The enormity of the international implications become apparent as Buck details the founding of committees, the development of treaties, and the behind-the-scenes work needed to accomplish the restoration. He enumerates setbacks as well as successes to provide a clear, balanced work. Highly recommended for all general collections.
