Editorial Reviews:
Review:

"These stories are the merest taste of [Musil's] incredible genius, and ought to be read with the understanding that they are exercises, however brilliant, of a man who worked otherwise on a much larger scale."

Guy Davenport, National Review, 8/9/66

Review:

"But for the existence of Young Torless [published in 1906] it would be possible to think of the short stories as experimental work, but Musil's first novel is such a finished production, such a completely realized thing, that the notion of an experiment in the stories must be rigorously qualified. He was not an apprentice in 1911. It is necessary to say this because in amny other respects the short stories are indeed experimental. They are, for instance, moral experiments. Hence they are not only illuminating in themselves but the cause of illumination in The Man Without Cause [Musil's last novel, unfinished at his death in 1942]....Musil moved from one word to the next by the force of a commanding rhetoric: so that the ideas on which the fiction is based gain a certain grandeur from the energy of mind devoted to their cause."

Denis Donoghue, New York Review of Books, 5/26/66
