So Far From Home: Manila's Santo Tomas Internment Camp, 1942-1945 puts you on the scene as United States citizens, Canadians, Britons, and others were "invited" to enjoy the "custody" of the Japanese as civilian prisoners of war. This is the story of almost 4,000 people who formed a community in the Santo Tomas camp, all of whom shared increasingly hungry and miserable lives until their dramatic liberation by forces under General Douglas MacArthur on February 3, 1945.

From the Author:
I do not usually write on World War II, but this is an especially compelling story. It is also a family story: my wife, Patricia Keiffer, was conceived in the camp, in which her mother, father, sister, and grandmother were held. The story was assembled in part from family records. It is a story that was aching to be written.
About the Author:
Bruce E. Johansen is Robert T. Reilly Professor of Communication and Native American Studies at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He has published nine other books, mostly in Native American Studies, including Forgotten Founders (Gambit, 1982), The Encyclopedia of Native American Biography (Henry Holt, 1997), and The Encyclopedia of Native American Legal Tradition (Greenwood, 1998). He is the husband of Patricia Keiffer, who was conceived at Santo Tomas by her mother Anne and father Don.
