In all 378 early books in nineteen languages are described in detail. It was the first substantial bibliography on the subject and remains to this day one of the few references ever published. Harting spent twenty years collecting books, an experience he put to good use in compiling this bibliography. Most books he had either procured, seen or examined. The arrangement of the book is by language, then by author. The descriptions are very thorough, providing full author, title, and very useful and detailed annotations about each book. Harting also lists all the editions of the various titles. The bibliography is also illustrated with black and white illustrations. Though once reprinted, no edition is currently available.
