Periplus is an important reference work which covers not only portolan charts, but also mappae mundi and regional maps. The maps are described in chronological order. The index is comprehensive and there are sixty facsimile reproductions. The original edition of 1897 has always been quite scarce, and sells for in excess of two thousand five hundred dollars.
